Goals - October 2013

Goals – October 2013

I apologize for being MIA lately. Life is crazy for me right now.

I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting over the past few weeks and one of the things that has been bugging me has been my goals. I set goals every month, but really, my goals have been my to-do list. I am not ok with that anymore. My goals should be more than just a to-do list. And I should set some long-term goals too. I’m not sure I’m ready to set those today, but I am going to be less “to-do list” and more “big picture” in my goal setting moving forward. I also think you’ll see goals repeat themselves, for good reason, as the months go on.

That said, I’ll update you on how September went before moving on to my new style of goals.

Professional Goals - September 2013
Finish fall mailer. – Nope. Not done yet. Hoping for end of next week.
Finish Annual Report. – Nope. If this goes out in November, I’ll be happy. And surprised. It’s out of my hands now.
Finish analysis of 12-13. – Done. Many learning curves with a new staff member helping me with this.
Present at the Advancement committee meeting this month. – Done.
Calendar plan winter and spring (fall is done). – Yes.
Reach out to MS and LS principals about Grandparent Day. – Yes.
Start website overhaul. – Nope. This HAS to be done in the next few weeks before we launch our campaign.
Finalize volunteers. Not quite.
Get art work and my diplomas up on the wall in my new office. Art work = check. Diplomas = still somewhere in our garage storage.

Personal Goals - September 2013
Workout three days a week. I was until two weeks ago. I haven’t done anything but walk Winnie since.
Yoga once a week. I’ve gone twice in the past week. It is amazing what yoga does for my mind, body, and soul.
Figure out our plan to redoing the basement. That’s on hiatus.
Have a puppy play date with our neighbors. Yes.
Goggle hangout with my besties so we can “meet” Kristen’s daughter. Yes, this was Oct 2 but I’m still counting it!
Take Winnie on at least one long walk (i.e., around a lake) every week. We do long walks every day now. I love that time together.
Finish one item from my summer to-do list: “B” cork project, selling some wedding stuff on Craig’s list, or sorting through pictures and music on my phone and computer. Nope, nope, and nope. I did finally get started on the B project; just not finished.
Stain our deck. Yes. I didn’t do anything on this project so it really should not have been on my list. But good for Michael for getting it done!
Clean out our flower boxes and get yard ready for fall. Not yet. If the weather cooperates on an upcoming weekend (this weekend is supposed to be total crap), then I can do this.
Change out my closet from spring/summer to fall/winter. I’ve taken my spring clothes out, but haven’t brought my fall/winter stuff upstairs yet.
Go shopping for fall clothes. Nope.
Host my annual Miss America party. Yes, always a good time.
Girls Night sometime this month. Canceled. Hoping for one in late October.
Read 3 books. Yes, I’ve been doing a ton of reading lately.
Menu plan each week and stick to it. Nope. We’ve been really bad about this lately.
Blog three times a week.  Hahaha…
Do another “life planning” session with Michael. While not as formal, I would say we’ve done a few of them.
Plan our travel calendar for the next year. Not quite, though we did book our plane tickets for skiing over new year’s with Michael’s fam.
Go out on a date, just Michael and me. Yes. It was so nice. And needed.
Enjoy our one year anniversary! Of course.

Professional goals

  1. Re-read my notes from Lean In, take one thing from my notes, and implement in my career.
  2. Answer the following questions: What skills have I learned from my jobs? What skills do I want to learn? If I cannot get those skills from this job, how can I learn them?
  3. Answer the following questions: What do I bring to the table in my job? What should I be bringing to the table?
  4. Read at least one business/leadership book.
  5. Implement new volunteer management plan.
  6. Take at least one parent volunteer to coffee to build relationships with my volunteers.
  7. Become a more active volunteer for my local professional organization. I have been on a committee for three months, but have yet to make a meeting.

Personal Goals

  1. Commit to yoga at least once a week. Commit to running two days a week. Do them both because they reduce stress, calm anxiety, and make me feel good.
  2. Relax and go with the flow. Be more spontaneous. Everything does not have to be planned.
  3. Work on my listening skills.
  4. Go on at least 2 dates with Michael this month: dinner, apple-picking, hiking, bike riding, etc.
  5. Start the Michael and Jenni Reading Club – read a book at the same time and discuss.
  6. Take more pictures of me and Michael.
  7. Reconnect with my girlfriends.
  8. Eat better. Cut down on sugar.
  9. With Michael, finalize a budget plan.
  10. Walk with Winnie and Michael every day. We’ve been doing a lot of Winnie and Jenni or Winnie and Michael walks lately. We need family walks.
  11. Stop letting Winnie keeping me from things I want/need to do. She can stay in the kitchen if she’s going nuts/getting in my way. Stop making excuses and get stuff done.
  12. Tell Michael how I love, support, and cherish him every day.

Goals - September 2013

Thank goodness August is over. That month was insane for us and I’m looking forward to a slower, less busy September. We only have 2-3 things on the calendar each week instead of 7-10. Maybe I’ll achieve more of my goals!

Professional Goals - August 2013
Finalize all my end-of-fiscal-year reports. Done.
Start website overhaul. Nope. Need to do this in September.
Send volunteer thank yous. Done.
Get approval for our fall mailer and begin working on it with the writer. Done and working on it.
Get art work and my diplomas up on the wall in my new office. Nope. Still white walls.
Send out a mailer that we have been wanting to do for two years. Done.
Send stewardship mailer to class of 2013 parents. Done.
Finalize AF chairs and division chairs. Still reaching out to volunteers but have my list finalized.

Personal Goals - August 2013
Workout three days a week. Done, plus 2-3 walks a day with Winnie.
Yoga once a week. Nope. I need some yoga in my life.
Bring my lunch until school lunch starts. No more going out for lunch. Yes, I was pretty good about this.
Have a great “couples weekend” at the cabin. Yes. See more on my blog post about it.
Labor Day weekend at the cabin. Yes. So nice to relax.
Figure out our plan to redoing the basement - new drywall and new flooring (we're toying with the idea of a cork floor instead of carpet). Nope. We need a weekend at home to do this.
Have a puppy play date with our wedding officiant and her new puppy (and take pictures). We’ve rescheduled 3 times between us so let’s hope the 4th time is a charm. Yes. And poor Parker, her puppy, got beat up by Winnie. She needs to learn how to play with puppies smaller than her.
Finalize financial things with our planner. Done.
Goggle hangout with my besties after Kristen has her new daughter. I will propose times and dates so we can all “meet” her. No, but it’s on my to-do list.
Take Winnie on at least one long walk (i.e., around a lake) every week. Yep.
Finish items on my summer to-do list: “B” cork project, selling some wedding stuff on Craig’s list, and sorting through pictures and music on my phone and computer. No more Fridays off so this could be challenging. Ha. I did none of those things. But I did FINALLY rearrange our junk cabinet.
Read two books. I read 6!
Plan to NOT have anything in the evenings at least once during the work week. Nope, we had something every night the whole month (I’m not kidding).
Go to the State Fair and eat to my heart's desire. No wedding in 8 days this year! Yes. We ate: chocolate milkshake, MN wine tasting, corn on the cob, doughsant (croissant doughnut), Italian sausage on a stick, cheese curds, and Sweet Martha’s cookies. All in 45 minutes. Yum!
Blog three times a week. Hahaha… Nope, but I’ll keep trying.

Goals - August 2013

July seemed to go by fast, and yet, it seems like forever ago. I can’t believe it was only 30 days ago that we were at the cabin for the 4th of July weekend!

Per usual, I did ok on my goals. Hey, there’s always room for improvement.

Professional Goals - July 2013
Finalize and send thank you card. Done.
Start working on all my end-of-fiscal-year reports. Started. There are so many.
Start website overhaul. Nope, not yet.
Send volunteer thank yous. Finalizing today. I’m done with my part but waiting on a volunteer.
Meet with graphic designer about next year’s projects. Done. We met with the writer today. But I will be shocked if these are mailed by our goal date (2nd week of October).
Move into my new office (supposed to be done by the end of the month – I’ll believe it when I see it). YES! I’m in it! I love it!
Celebrate two years at my school. Michael and I gave each other a kiss, as our work anniversaries are the same day.
Take the last week of the month/first week of July off for a stay-cation :-) I did and it was SO nice!

Personal Goals - July 2013
Complete my first (and only?) triathlon! YES! Read my recap here.
Keep working out post-tri. Eh, I could be better about this. I’ve done a few runs and one swim, but no bike rides. I also want to get back into yoga.
Eat healthy lunches. I’m doing fairly well at this.
Menu plan each week using things from our garden – herbs and tomato recipes needed! We’ve been eating lots of bruchetta and finding creative uses for our jalepenos.
Enjoy our long-weekend at the cabin for the 4th of July. It was awesome (and seems like FOREVER ago).
Have a fun weekend with the S family. It was a blast because my sister Jessi and my parents made it too! Recap to come.
Have a fun weekend in Minot for my cousin’s wedding. It was also a good time!
Meet with financial planner. Done. Now the ball is in our court.
Lunch with Michelle. It ended up being a breakfast but it was great to see her.
Start puppy kindergarten for Winnie. Yes and she graduates tomorrow.
Go out on a date night. Nope, but we had several at home. July was just insanely busy for us, and August is shaping up to be even worse. I cannot wait until September.
Check off at least two things on my summer to-do list. I got a few done (but none of the ones I really wanted to do): Got Winnie groomed, deep cleaned the house, returned some shoes, and renewed my passport. Still on my list are my “B” cork project, selling some wedding stuff on Craig’s list (I know – I should have done this eons ago), and sorting through pictures and music on my phone and computer.
Continue training Winnie – potty training, walking, no nipping, etc. She still has a few accidents but her nipping and walking have improved. But she recently learned how to jump on the dining room chairs, which I'm not enjoying very much.
Blog three times a week. Hahaha…

Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to our first triathlon last weekend. You can read a full recap here.

Creep to coming home to a flooded basement last weekend. We're planning to strip it down to the studs, based on the damage :-(

Creep to the insane humidity this week. I am looking forward to the relief the meteorologists are predicted this weekend.

Sunshine to a long weekend with the S family at the cabin. And Jessi and my parents are coming on Saturday. Should be lots of fun!

Sunshine to Winnie being a cutie this week. We just love her!

Sunshine to Winnie learning to use her potty bells. I think this weekend at the cabin might be challenging but she has the hang of it at home.

Sunshine to meeting so many of our neighbors now that we have a dog. Everyone wants to meet the new puppy :-)

Creep to being so busy at work. I have a ton to do next week before I'm out the week after for a week of vacation.

Sunshine to my new office being under construction. I've been relocated to our business office and I have to say, I kind of like it over here. I'm in the corner and everyone is pretty quiet. It's nice! I am so excited to have a space that is my own and I can shut the door. I haven't had my own office in 4 years (I shared an office at the NAA too) so this will be awesome!

Creep to being totally unmotivated to workout this week. We do plan to swim at the cabin this weekend though.

Creep to not having enough time in the day. This week felt so hectic and I just wish I had more time. I went grocery shopping last night at 9:15pm for Pete's sake!

Triathlon: We did it!

Well, the tri was Saturday and I finished. But there were SO many twists and turns that day that it will take me some time to recap it all. If you're only interested in the race recap, scroll down to find that section.

3:30am
Michael and I both wake up to a big thunderstorm. Lots of thunder, lightning, and rain. We both said, "It will pass" and went back to sleep.

5:00am
Our alarm goes off and it's still raining, perhaps harder now than it was at 3:30. We eat breakfast, take quick showers, put on our temporary tattoos (with our race numbers), and finished packing. As I looked at the clock and realized it was nearly 6, I told Michael we should hurry. We went to the garage and again, still pouring. We left and drove to the race site, Lake Nokomis. There were sheets of rain falling. And it was dark. Michael said, "There is no way this race is starting in an hour."

6:15am
We parked five blocks from the race site, and noticed lots of bike rakes with the bikes still on them. Everyone is sitting in their cars. We talked to someone who said the transition area was closed and race officials were asking everyone to wait in their vehicles. They said to check Facebook for updates. 10 minutes later, they posted the transition area was open. As we walked our bikes to the transition area, it was still pouring and the amount of water on the ground was insane. We were walking in ankle-deep puddles. Michael and my transition areas were not close to one another so we split up to set up our stuff. And by set up, I mean store in a giant 50 gallon ziploc bag we were given the day before (thank goodness we took those!). I went back to Michael, we got out our umbrella and we waited for announcements about the race plan.

6:45am
The first announcement was made: we obviously were not starting on time. Race officials were looking at radar maps to gauge the storm and also looking at the course to see what the plan will be. At this time, they announced that the international course (the long course) bike route was impassable in multiple spots and it would not be happening that day. More updates soon.

M and I tried to walk around and stay warm. We tried to get our legs marked, but the permanent markers were not working because everyone was so wet. We were soaked, cold, and stressed. We had trained so hard - please do not cancel the whole thing!

7:15am
Another announcement: the storm would pass in an hour (no one could be in the water for the swim if there was any lightning in the area). Start time for the pros would be 9am, and everyone would follow quickly after that. The waves (think heats if you're a track athlete or swimmer) would move fast and athletes would be released 2 at a time instead of 1 at a time. The last part of the announcement was the shocker: there would be no international course run that day. All athletes, including the pros, would compete in the sprint course. M and I signed up for the sprint race so it didn't affect us but I felt so badly for everyone who had put in the time to train for the long course.

Check out this water!

9am
Everyone hit the beach to watch the pros do the swim. It was pretty windy. Since there was race money on the line, the pros actually did the sprint swim course twice. Though the pros made the swim look easy, you could tell the wind was really affecting them, especially on the swim in. No one was staying on the outside of the buoys, as the wind and current was blowing them hard to the middle. Michael and I met up with his family and watched most of the international heats go, and then we went over the start area for the sprint waves.

Pre-race - isn't my arm tattoo awesome?!
10:00am
Michael started his race.

10:40am
I started my race.

11:38am
Michael finished his race.

12:35pm
I finished my race.

MY RACE RECAP

Swim - .25 miles
The made us line up in number order. I was third to last. Luckily, since your numbers are on your arms, I made friends with the women around me after Michael left. We all chatted and complained about the crappy conditions: windy day, late start, the fact that the pros were already done and we hadn't even started yet, etc. I was the only first-timer in our group of 8. Everyone was really nice, which was great. We all wanted the best for our group and no one was a crazy competitor.

As we walked the beach to do the swim, I didn't even have time to be nervous. It literally was 10 seconds from when I started walking until I was running into the water. Ed, Patty, and Amy (Michael's parents and sister) were right there to cheer me on (have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE my in-laws?), which was awesome. The girl I was running into the water with and I gave each other hugs, said good luck, and then we were off.

Thank you to Amy for the pics!

There I go!

I'm on the right running into the water
I felt great for the first 3 minutes. I was swimming calmly, my breathing was good, and I was mostly going straight. And then, I was suddenly overtaken by kids. That darn Jr. Invitational group started just 30 seconds after I hit the water and these kids had no decorom. They were swimming on top of us! Someone the women in my wave were screaming at them, but I just tried to ignore them and keep going. It was SO windy and choppy, and I took in two breathes full of water. I decided to breaststroke to the buoy. Once I reached the buoy, it was madness. None of us could swim in a straight line. The lifeguards kept yelling, "Keep the buoys on your right." I was yelling, "I'm trying!" It was so hard. My googles filled with water about 100 feet from shore so I had to stop and adjust them. As soon as my feet touched the ground, I stopped swimming and started running. I felt like my body was 1000 pounds when I was out of the water and running to the transition area. I was also so thankful the swim was over.

Swim time: 12:20.58. I was hoping to be around 10-11 minutes but since it was so windy, I was not surprised by my time at all.

Transition 1: Swim to Bike
The good part was my bike was right next to the swim in, a mere 10 steps. The bad part was my bike was a good 500 feet from the bike start. I had to put on my helmet, sunglasses and watch, rinse the sand off my feet, put on socks and my shoes (luckily I got bungee cord laces, which saved me at least a minute), and then run my bike the 500 feet to the bike start. I hated every second of running with my bike. Once I finally reached the bike mount, I took off.

Transition time: 3:47.67. I was hoping for a 3:30 transition. It did not feel like it took me nearly four minutes on that part, but I had to run really far with my bike, which is not easy.

Bike - 15 miles
It was hot and sunny the whole ride. I saw a ton of people on my way out, as there were many athletes on their way back in (I was so jealous). But overall, I saw very few people on my route. I was passed by about 5 people (all stupid Jrs) and I passed about 20 people. Otherwise, it was a quiet and lonely ride. I settled into my areo bars (so glad I got those!) and found a good rhythm. By the time I rode, the roads were dry, which was great. I never worried about crashing, which was also great. The only snaffu came when I took some water and poured it on my head because I was hot - it ended up on my sunglasses, which was really annoying. I tried to finish the bike strong but I was tired and took in just two sips of water the whole bike. Not good to gear up for the run.

Bike time: 1:02:17.69. My goal was 1:00:00. I wore a watch so I could keep track of my time. At 5 miles, I was at 20 minutes, which was where I wanted to be. At 10 miles, I was at 39 minutes, one minute ahead of my goal. But the last five miles were brutal, and I couldn't rehydrate. Still, I was only 2 minutes off my goal so that is ok with me.

Transition 2: Bike to run
This was annoying. So many people were done with their race and were just milling around in the transition area. Get out of my way, people! I'm still racing! They also changed the bike in because of the rain so instead of being right next to my station, it was were the start was. So again, I had to run my bike 500 feet. I put my bike back, took of my helmet, grabbed my hat and race belt and was off. The run start was the same as the swim in so that made it easier for me. I also saw Michael (who was done), his family, and my friends Becky and JB at this point. I was in the zone and totally exhausted so I didn't even smile at them (I should have-bad Jenni!) and struggled to get my cap on when I started the run.

Transition 2 time: 2:20.70. That was a good and fast transition. I didn't have to switch shoes (we don't have cycling shoes-on my list for the future) so that made me one of the faster people in my age group to get through the transition. I was happy with that time.

Transition from bike to run - thank you Becky for this photo
Run - 3.1 miles
Oh my gosh, I was tired at this point! Michael ran with me for the first 100 meters to give me words of encouragement. I was so tired and just wanted it to be over. I kept telling myself  "Do not walk. Do NOT walk!" There were an aid station at 400 meters and they had Gatorade. Finally, some fuel! Yuck - it was yellow Gatorade! I hate yellow Gatorade! I spit it out and went with water. I poured two cups on my head, drank one, and spit one out. After what seemed like eternity, I reached the one mile sign. ONE MILE - ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That was probably the slowest mile I've run in my entire life. My mind was battling with itself at this point, telling me that I couldn't do this and also telling me not to walk. At the one mile mark, there is also a run up a bridge. That was brutal! I wanted to kill the course designers at that point. But I just kept moving and tried to keep up with the people in front of me. At the two mile marker, I just kept telling myself "One more mile." About halfway into it, I found Michael waiting near the path to cheer me on. He actually ran with me the last half mile. I was defeated at this point and near tears. I SO wanted to be done. He just kept being positive and telling me how proud he was (I know, I am so lucky to have such an awesome husband!). Finally, we went over a small hill and Michael told me that the finish line was just around the corner. He ran off the path and let me finish on my own. What I love about races is that they announce your name as you come across the finish line. I was all by myself so the race announcer said "Here comes Jenni Beadle. Jenni, how are you feeling?" I gave him a thumbs up, lifted my arms over my head and crossed the finish line. Woo hoo - I made it!

Done!!!
Run time: 34:33.79. I was so disappointed in my time, though honestly, I'm not a strong runner and I knew that. I actually thought it was even slower than it was. I felt like I was hardly moving and I knew my pace was slower than it should have been. I was shooting for 30:00.

OVERALL TIME: 1:55:20.43. My goal was 1:45:00, so I was 10 minutes off my goal. As we waited in line to get our times, I was sure that I was over 2 hours, based on my run. I am glad I finished under 2 hours and even though I missed my goal, I feel good about my time.

I finished 36 out of 58 in my age group (30-34 women). This is about where I was hoping to fall - the middle tier - so I am happy with my place. Overall in sprint women, I was 162nd out of 301 and 483rd out of 709 in the sprint category overall.

MICHAEL'S RACE RECAP (not as detailed as my recap)
Michael killed the swim. He was 1st in his age group, 7th in sprint men, and 9th in sprint overall (men+women = 709 people). To put it in perspective, I was 501st :-) His time was 6:37.59, twice as fast as mine.

His transition from swim to bike was 3:17.37.

Michael was not happy with his bike time. Like me, he thought the last five miles were grueling. His time was 57:29.14. He had a good transition from bike to run though, at 2:05.52.

Michael's run was when I was biking: it was hot and sunny. Still, he ran a 28:54.08, so he was happy that he finished under 30 minutes.

Michael on the home stretch

Go Michael!

Finish line!
His overall time was 1:38:23.70. He finished 7th out of 20 in his age group (20-24 men); 174th out of 408 men and 225th out of 702 overall. Michael was not very happy with his time. Like me, he was hoping to be about 10 minutes faster than he was.

Still, we did it! And as early as yesterday, I was already thinking about doing another one. On Saturday afternoon, I was thinking "Never again. That sucked." And yesterday, I was looking up dates for future races. Michael and I both agree that now that we know what it is like to race, our training will look a lot different next time around, if there is a next time. He wants to improve his bike and run, and I can definitely shave minutes off of all of areas of competition.

So that's it - the total event recap. It certainly did not go as we thought it would, but it was memorable, fun, and exhilarating just the same. It was by far the hardest physical thing I've ever done, and I'm so glad we did it. We are triathletes now!

Here's a side by side comparison of before and after. I weighed 9 pounds less after the race...

Our celebration on Saturday was cut short when we got home. Remember how I said it was raining really hard that morning? Well, we got about 5 inches of rain over the course of 5 hours and we came home to a basement with standing water in it. So we spent 4 hours on Saturday moving everything out of the main room, using every towel we own to soak up the water, and ripping out the carpet. Yep, we lost all the carpet in the main room. We might lose the bedroom as well - not sure yet. We ripped off the wainscoting last night as well. It will take us a long time (and some cash-ola) to repair the damage. Boo to tainting the memory of our first tri!

Welcome to the Jungle!

Michael and his dad bought out house 3.5 years ago, after the previous owner had passed away. She must have REALLY loved perennials because our yard is covered in them. The front yard, the back yard, there were plants everywhere.

Immediately after buying it, Michael, and his dad, uncle, and grandpa took out 50+ arbor vitae trees from the front lawn. They planted grass seed that spring and did not do much else until Michael and I moved in a year and a half later.

When we moved in in July 2011, the front yard looked pretty good, but the backyard was like a rain forest. More than half of the backyard was covered with hosta and day lilies. We took out about 100 (I’m not kidding) and planted more grass, but that was it. We left the hosta outlining the yard, many trees, and three planter boxes untouched. There were about 150 hosta and 30 day lillies in that group (again, I’m not kidding – they must have REALLY loved hosta).

Last year, we did nothing other than flowers, as we were getting everything in order at the cabin for the wedding. Our yard continued to look like a jungle and it bothered me so much that I sort of refused to go out there at the end of the summer.

This year, we finally have time to do stuff in our yard. Mother Nature has not been super great to us but here are some of the projects we have tackled so far:

  • Attempting to level the ground. Both our front and back yards are horribly uneven so we put down a ton of dirt to help level it out. The back yard still needs work.
  • Planted more grass seed. We have planted it every year since we moved in. I can’t wait for the year we do NOT have to do that.
  • Weeding. We have done a TON of weeding. I weeded the patch of grass next to our driveway opposite the front yard that is a combo of both hosta and grass (sparingly). I also weeded all of those planter boxes in our back yard. There are a good 30 hosta plants and two random day lilies (that I need to transplant somewhere else) but there were 6 hours worth of weeds. It was not a fun project.
  • Mulch. We have mulched the outlining area of the back yard.
  • Transplant/get rid of plants. We moved several hosta and day lilies to more appropriate spots, as we would find random hosta all over the yard, and 15 clumped in a corner. We also had these horrible fern-like things that we both hated so we pitched those.
  • Planted herbs, tomatoes, and flowers. We have one regular tomato plant, a cherry tomato plant, basil, sage, thyme, cilantro, and parsley, along with four types of flowers (three being dahlias, which are my favorite flower).

And still to do once it stops raining around here:

  • Spread more dirt in the back yard.
  • Weed three more areas of the back yard.
  • Spray Round Up – pretty everywhere that is not grass.
  • Transplant more plants to different areas.
  • More mulching.
  • Plant some hydrangea. I really want to do this (they are my second favorite flower), but I’m not sure if it will happen this year.

Here are some pics of the garden/progress we have made. I’ll post more when it looks better. Right now, every time I look at it, I still scream “Welcome to the Jungle” in an Axel Rose voice in my head.

Check out the growth on these hosta. Picture one was taken on Mother's Day. Picture two was taken 5 days later.

Still a work in progress...I told you I wasn't kidding about all the hosta!

Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to good workouts this week, including yoga on Monday. That felt amazing!

Creep to constantly eating. That is likely related to the workouts but I need to do better with my snacking.

Sunshine to finding out about a practice session opportunity for our tri. It's a guided tour of the actual bike course, which will be so helpful for Michael and I since we've never done this before.

Sunshine to Michael making dinner for me last night. Even when I got home late from work and could help, he insisted on doing it himself (I couldn't cross "the line" in the kitchen). It was very sweet of him.

Sunshine to having lunch with a friend in my professional field. We used to be counterparts when I had my alumni job but she has a new job now too. It was really great to see her and catch up.

Sunshine to talking wedding stuff with that friend. I had sort of forgotten had much fun I had doing it all. But I do not miss the amount of time it took!

Creep to phone tag with Kristen this week. We will connect soon, I hope!

Sunshine to last night's series finale of The Office. I love that show and thought the finale was perfect.

Sunshine to all the yard and garden work we've done lately. We spent all of last weekend working outside and the yard looks so much better. We also planted our garden: tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, parsley, sage, basil, thyme, cilantro, peppers, and a bunch of flowers, including three dahlias this year. I LOVE dahlias!

Creep to the weather - rainy. We are supposed to go to the Twins game tonight.

Sunshine to going to the cabin tomorrow. We have lots to do - cleaning, yard work, etc. but once we get it done, we won't have to do much more this season. Woohoo!

Goals - April 2013

It's the beginning of the month and that's means it's time for goals! With two weeks off, you'd think I'd get it all done. Not so much...

Purple = complete
Black = incomplete

Professional Goals - March 2013
Invitations out the door to DAA event. This is a must! Literally went out a month before the RSVP date. Not happy about this but at least they finally made it out the door.
Transition prep. Some is done but still have more to do.
Change that freaking calendar. I DID THIS! FINALLY!
Hire someone for my job so I can start my new one. Still haven't hired anyone. And was told that I have to do both now with no more help from my predecessor. Awesome.
Clean my desk. Yes, I just hope that I can keep it up.
Work only one day a week during Spring Break. Worked one day each week.
Enjoy time off the last two weeks of March. Yes I did :-)

Personal Goals - March 2013
Run/spin/swim three days a week. I did this 4-5 days a week. Now I need to get into the 6 days.
Yoga one day a week. Blarg.
Sign up for the triathlon. Yes! We are officially doing it!
Try a new recipe. Tried a few - my favorite was our lemon-ricotta pancakes with berry compote.

Figure out what to do when Jessi visits. We had a great time :-) We shopped, cooked, went out for dinner with my parents (also in town) and played Settlers of Catan. It was great!

Do my March Madness bracket with Michael. This is our 4th year of it and we love it. Done and I sucked it right up (per usual).
Watch some March Madness games. Yes, have been able to watch lots of games. Even  the horrible injury heard 'round the world in yesterday's Louisville/Duke game. I'm still naseous thinking about it.
Enjoy Ski Trip 2013 with Jami and Chris. Yes, it was great. I still need to blog this.
Go to the cabin for a weekend. We went this past weekend and I did this.

Hang our wedding photos. Not yet. We are waiting for Michaels to have a sale on the frame we used so that we can get the last photo framed. It would like kind of dumb to hang the others with the missing photo.
Organize our junk cabinet. One of the few things on my to-do list that I didn't get to.
Enjoy two glorious weeks of Spring Break! I'd like two more :-)

Sunshine to a good swim yesterday. I swam 8 50s with 30 seconds rest. I thought I was going to drown on the last one but I did it!

Goals – February 2013

I’ll say it again for the third year in a row – February is my least favorite month. Even though it’s the shortest month of the year, it is 28 LONG days! But despite my hate of February, I actually did ok on my personal goals this month. Professional goals, on the other hand, not so much.

Professional Goals - February 2013
Get through NYC event. Cancelled – I didn’t have to go. WOOHOO!
Invitations out the door to DAA event. Not done. It would take too long to explain why this is taking so long, but let me just say that it has nothing to do with me. I would have had them out the door three weeks ago if I could have. We need to get the invitations out the door so people come, especially since the event is April 19! I am waiting on approval from one more person and then I’m hoping our printer can finish and mail by early next week.
Send save the dates for Reunion Weekend. Done. I hate doing that. So glad I won’t have to next year.
Begin transition prep. Well, since we haven't hired anyone yet, I'm not in a hurry to do this.
Read one of the books I ordered. I did this! It was boring! :-)
Change that freaking calendar. GRR!
Hire someone for my job so I can start my new one. No. This was SOOOO frustrating. I will be lucky if we have someone in place by the middle of April.

Personal Goals – February 2013
Run/spin/swim three days a week. YES! More like 4-5, including swimming twice a week all month.
Yoga one day a week. This is where I’m slacking. I’m hoping to jump back on the bandwagon this month.
Sign up for the triathlon. Not yet. Must do this month before the price goes up.
Try a new restaurant. Yes – Café Lurcat.
Try a new recipe. Yes. Love our breakfast cookbook (3 recipes, all successful) and I made a new soup last week that was full of veggies and delicious.
Schedule couples dates with Lara and Jordan and Chad and Michelle. Not only did we schedule them, they even happened in the month of Feb.
Book plane tickets for Ski Trip 2013. Yes. We leave tomorrow!!!
Go to the cabin for a weekend. Yes and it was lovely. Will be going again this month.
Paint the kitchen and guest bathroom (or at least choose the colors). We painted the kitchen (twice) but not the bathroom yet. I might tackle that over spring break.
Select floor tile. This project has been put on hold. I haven’t found anything I like, and we’ve decided to go on a fun trip instead :-)
Order wedding photos. I finally did this! They are being framed right now so I hoping they are up on the wall in a few weeks.
Read two books. I read three. All were weird so I'm hoping for better luck this month.
Do our taxes. Done!

Sunshines and Creeps

Creep to painting half the kitchen and hating it. The color was not what we want - much too blue and much too bright.

Creep to repainting the kitchen tonight. Fun Friday night at our house.

Sunshine to picking a nice neutral (my original pick) that looks great! If you're looking for a great neutral, I recommend Kilim Beige from Sherwin Williams.

Creep to being super busy at work this week.

Sunshine to being approached for a job at my alma mater by two VPs. It was awfully flattering, but the timing is not right. In ten years (or two years ago), it would be my dream job.

Creep to being in a funk this week. Hoping to shake over the weekend.

Sunshine to dinner at our house tomorrow with Lara and Jordan. We are making homemade pizza. Yum!

Sunshine to a hilarious story my aunt shared with me. She works for the MN Orchestra and today, they were interviewing caterers for exclusive contracts for their new concert hall. One of the caterers was Macy's, our wedding caterer. When asked about a recent successful event, they talked about our wedding! My aunt said "Imagine their shock when I told them I was there and my husband still talks about the food, especially the late night snacks." It made me laugh, and also feel good that they considered it a success.

Sunshine to my girlfriends and their exciting baby news. Super happy for all of them!

The joys of choosing a paint color

Michael and I have wanted to paint our kitchen for awhile. It's currently butter yellow and I'm over it. I love the look of a blue kitchen and since our dinnerware is blue, we thought it would be easy to find the color.

WRONG! We have tried several samples on our walls over the past few weeks and our wall basically looked  like this:

That said, I think we've finally decided.

This is Tidewater by Sherwin Willliams. It actually looks a lot greener here than it does on our wall. I'll post pics when we finish!

Goals: February 2013

Oh January – you were freaking freezing! And busy! And yet, I didn't do so hot on my goals, especially my work ones. What the heck did I do all month at work???

Purple Bold = complete
Black Bold = incomplete

Professional Goals - January 2013
Learn as much as I can at my conference this month. Done. I actually got some good takeaways.
Invitations out the door to NYC event. Yes. And RSVPs are low, which I knew they would be. I am so over this event.
Invitations out the door to DAA event. If we only had a date…
Send save the dates for Reunion Weekend. They are here but I haven’t sent them yet. Hopefully this month.
Begin transition prep. Trying to get started on it.
Read one of the books I ordered. I’ve read half of one.
Watch one of the webinars I ordered. Bahaha, maybe sometime this summer.
Change that freaking calendar. Nope. Why do I bother this???
Interview people for my job. We have interviews this week.

Personal Goals – January 2013
Run three days a week. Yes, but it was hard b/c I am so bored of a treadmill.
Yoga once a week. I went once. That’s a start.
Celebrate Michael’s birthday with special, fun surprises for him. It was a fun day!
Try at least two new recipes. Yes – I think we tried 6 this month, thanks to a new cookbook. YUM! I've made banana bread two weekends in a row.
Phone dates with Kristen, Steph, Jen, and Caitlin. I even SAW the first three but have failed to connect with Caitlin.
Hang out with Chad and Michelle. Yes – finally!!!
Watch Miss America and talk with Kristie about it :-) Yes. The woman I wanted to win did not but oh well.
Figure out wedding stuff to sell and get on Craig's List. Nope. Spring Break goal.
Get my wedding dress preserved. Another spring break goal.
Paint the kitchen and guest bathroom. If we could only decide on paint colors. We have 3 1x1 squares in the bathroom and 2 in the kitchen.
Start planning our bathroom project. Not only are we planning, we’ve started! Paint = check! Now on to floor tile!
Take down outside Christmas lights. Done. We had to wait for a day when it wasn’t so cold or snowy so they were up until Jan 24 but we stopped turning them on on Michael’s birthday.
Start thinking about spring planting (yeah, I’m a nerd). Yes. Hydrangea, here I come!
Order wedding photos. Grr…
Read at least three books (I have a plane ride this month so I should be able to knock out one book on that). Yes! And I have so many more to read.
