Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to FINALLY hiring someone for my old job. I’m going to jump on a pedestal right now because I am the one who found her (just call me a recruiter) and had I not done that, who knows when we would have hired someone for the job. Plus I think she’s going to be fantastic. June 17th cannot come soon enough!

Sunshine to a long weekend – I love having Mondays off (more than Fridays)!

Sunshine to going to the cabin for the long weekend, but Creep to the crappy weather forecast.

Creep to a lot of weeding that needs to be done in our back yard. Fun Friday night ahead for me.

Sunshine to homemade pizza tonight.

Sunshine to joining a volunteer committee with a local professional fundraisers association. I have missed volunteering since we moved to MN so it will be nice to get back into it.

Sunshine to spray tans. I wish I could afford to get them once a week.

Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to "bonus day" today - both Michael and I are off. It's nice to have an extra day together this weekend.

Sunshine to Easter dinner on Sunday. It's just Michael and me but we are cooking all of the things we want - ham, mashed potatoes, homemade rolls, corn, and angel food cake. Yum!

Creep to Spring Break is over. Back to work full time next week. Waa-waa.

Creep to my March Madness bracket being totally busted - darn you, Indiana.

Sunshine to my facial this week. My face feels a million times better.

Sunshine to a productive meeting with our financial planner this week.

Creep to my banana bread sinking yesterday after I took it out of the oven. I don't know what went wrong, but it still tastes good so whatever.

Sunshine to Face Timing with Steph this week. So great to catch up with her and meet her sweet little guy!

Sunshine to my birthday trip in one week!

Sunshines and Creeps

Creep to sucking at blogging this week. Being at my parents' in ND makes it hard to do anything that is part of my routine. I will be better next week!

Sunshine to closing on our house yesterday. More on that in a future post. For now, I'll just say the house is ours!

Sunshine to still having another week off. This break is going by so fast.

Creep to eating so poorly over the past 10 days. That number on the scale did NOT make me happy.

Sunshine to skiing on Sunday. I finally get to try my new skiis!

Sunshine to long weekends. Michael has Mon and Tues off. I can't wait to relax with him at the cabin for NYE.

Creep to working tomorrow. Just a few hours for an event but since I have family coming now, it's a big bummer.

Creep to de-decorating for Christmas. Probably my least favorite thing in the world.

Sunshine to West Wing. We are in the middle of Season 1 right now and loving it!

Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to being in ND until Wednesday. Happy to be here with my family!

Sunshine to seeing all my Oothoudt (mom’s maiden name) cousins tomorrow. We haven’t all been together for Christmas in at least 5 years, maybe more.

Creep to the cold, cold, COLD weather forecast in ND while I’m home. Love that there is a 2 degree difference between Tuesday’s high and low.

Sunshine to our Christmas-y date on Monday. Best Monday I have had in a long time :-)

Sunshine to Christmas with Michael’s family on Tuesday. As always, they are far too generous. Now if their gift would only get here.

Creep to the fact that Michael’s parents’ gift did not get here in time for Christmas. Of course I ordered it the last week in October and was guaranteed that it would be here by Christmas, only to have the company make an error on it and not send it to me until Dec 10, so it had to be sent back and it’s still not here yet. Michael’s parents were great about it but I was super disappointed.

Sunshine to our Christmas gift from my parents. It was delivered Wednesday and we love it.

Creep to sucking at working out this month. I’m sure I’ll do nothing by eat while we’re in ND too.

Sunshine to not having to go back to work (with the exception of an event on Dec 29) until January 7.

Creep that I haven’t figured out what to get Michael for his birthday yet (January 8).  I should get on that.

Sunshine to Christmas, my favorite holiday!

Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to taking today off so I can get some stuff done, like clean my house, bake, and finish some shopping. This is SUCH a busy time of year!

Creep to not having enough time in the day.

Sunshine to sending out Christmas cards this week.

Creep the few Christmas cards we've received this year. Maybe people just aren't doing them anymore...or we are not on that many lists...Sunshine to those who have sent us yours - they are on our fridge :-)

Sunshine to going to ND in less than a week. So excited for a few days of relaxing with my family.

Sunshine to our wedding album. We got it this week and I love it! Will share some pics in the future.

Creep to working on Sunday.

Sunshine to Christmas music. I pretty much love all Christmas songs, but there are some songs that just put me in the best Christmas-y mood (Christmas in Dixie by Alabama, Hard Candy Christmas by Dolly Parton, O' Holy Night by Martina McBride, and Do You Hear What I Hear by Whitney Houston are some of my very favorites!).

Creep to the city of St. Paul. You absolutely suck at snow removal.

Sunshine to my Birchbox this month. Pretty much loved everything in it!

Sunshine to our annual Christmas-y Date on Monday. We are purposefully doing it on the 17th since that is the day we got engaged. I can't wait!

Advent Calendar 2012: Part One

Last year, I created an activity advent calendar for Michael and I to do leading up to Christmas. You can read about our adventures last year here, here, and here.

This year, we decided to do it together, and take turns each day coming up with an activity. Michael has the odd days and I have the even days. I’ve had to switch a few because of overlaps already but that's ok.

Here’s what we’ve done so far:

Day 1

It’s finally December, time to celebrate! Let’s go downtown to shop for Christmas gifts at Macy’s and see the 8th Floor decorations to get ourselves in the Christmas spirit.
Michael complains every time we go to this that it doesn't change anymore (it changed every year when he was a kid and the store was still Dayton's). But I think it's fun and enjoy walking through it, despite the number of strollers and grandparents taking photos that we have to dodge. We also got about half of our shopping done that day.

Day 2
We had so much fun making our gingerbread house last year so let’s do another one this year. Just remember – the frosting tastes like toothpaste.
I think our house is even better this year than last year.

Day 3

Jenni Leigh Beadle, it’s already the 3rd of December! Let’s get in a festive mood by completing our holiday decorations and setting up our Christmas village for the first time while we sing wonderful duets to our favorite songs.
We had put up our decorations except for our Christmas village, which Michael bought last year. We ordered this for our Christmas village and I will post when it gets here. And here's some pics of our Christmas decorations.

Day 4
We are meeting my parents for dinner tonight so we don’t have much time. Let’s listen to a holiday CD on our drive to and from the restaurant and get in the Christmas spirit.
Michael worked late so he ended up meeting us at the restaurant. We listened to some tunes on the Christmas radio station on our way home from dinner though!

Day 5

LOML, let’s celebrate tonight with some peppermint hot chocolate while we watch our favorite holiday classics.
Unfortunately, Michael worked late this night too so we rain-checked the movie but we did enjoy some hot chocolate with a candy cane together.

Day 6
Rudolph, Clarice and Hermie are calling our names. Let’s watch one of my favorite TV specials tonight while snuggling on the couch. A warm drink like tea or cider would be nice too!
Last year, I bought the “Christmas Classics” on DVD: Rudolph, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty the Snowman, and Frosty Returns (I would call the last one a classic but whatever). So we popped in the DVD and snuggled on the couch to watch Rudolph. I forget every year about some of the poor lessons it teaches children: it’s not ok to be different, women are not capable of doing anything, and Santa and Donner are kind of a-holes. But I still watched it and probably will when I have kids someday too.

Day 7

How would you like to put on a few layers for our second annual trip to the Hollidazzle tonight? I can’t wait to watch from our own private balcony?
We bundled up because it was a cold night and watched the Hollidazzle parade from the balcony at Michael’s office. No one else was there so we had our own little private viewing place for the parade.

Day 8
I always look forward to our Christmas-y date but how about we do a second one this year at home? We can make a takes-long meal, use our new China or champagne glasses, and enjoy one of favorite activities together: cooking.
We made some delicious ravioli that night and drank some yummy wine! It was a great date night at home.

Day 9
In true winter wonderland Christmas spirit, late tonight let’s turn on the Yule Log and share our favorite Christmas stories.
We were supposed to go to my boss' house for a Hanakkuah party so that's why Michael choose this particular activity for this day - it would be easy to do when we got home late after the party was over. But it was canceled because we got 10 inches of snow yesterday. Still, we turned off all the lights, sat on the floor with the Yule Log playing in the background (yes, the same Yule Log on Comcast On Demand I talked about it my vows, for those of you who were at our wedding) and shared some stories from our Christmases as children, as well as developed ideas for what we wanted to do when we have kids someday.

And here's some pics from our snowy day. We even went snow-shoeing yesterday.

Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to exciting news. I can’t say much more right now but will share when I can. Sorry for being cryptic…
I am not pregnant for any of you who went there.

Sunshine to getting my hair done last night. Much needed!

Creep to missing Adam much more than usual this week. Monday marked two years since he died and I still feel overwhelmed by sadness at times.

Sunshine to one of my very best friends Michelle. She needs a little extra Sunshine right now (death in the family) so please send her some positive thoughts.

Sunshine to dinner with my parents this week for my dad’s birthday. It was a big birthday (he’s 20 years old than me so you can do the math) and Michael and I love spending the night with him and my mom.

Sunshine to our activity advent calendar. We have had fun taking turns with each day this year (Michael has the odd days and I have the evens). I’ll post an update of our activities so far next week.

Sunshine /Creep to snow this weekend. I am happy that it will finally look Christmas-y around here, but I am dreading driving in it.

Sunshine to my boss’ Hanukkah party on Sunday. She makes delicious potato latkes.

Sunshine that we have a snowblower this year. Thank you to one of Michael’s uncles for selling it to us last summer. I have a feeling it’s going to come in handy this weekend.
Side note – one of Michael’s uncles named Tom sold it to us. He has two uncles named Tom. Each is a brother to one of Michael’s parents and they have the EXACT SAME BIRTHDAY – date and year. How weird is that?!?!

Sunshine to Christmas music. I LOVE IT! My favorite song of all-time is O Holy Night. I could listen to either by Martina McBride or Lea Michele’s versions on repeat all day. And people who know me well know that I am capable of listening to the same song on repeat all day (Lara, remember some of my OFSL faves?).

Creep to car repairs. I hate those big bills.

Sunshine to going to ND in less than two weeks for Christmas with my family.

Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to my sweet little niece's first birthday today! I cannot believe how big she is and she is so mobile. Her personality is a lot like me when I was that age - always on the move :-) Love you Kynleigh!

Sunshine to a 5-day weekend for me and a 4-day weekend for Michael. It's so nice to have some time off together!

Sunshine to Thanksgiving food. It was delicious yesterday and I really enjoyed spending time with my family.

Creep to running out of photo storage on blogger. I either have to delete a bunch of photos or pay $2.50 a month to upgrade to more storage.

Creep to my paper weighing 10.2 lbs yesterday (I weighed it). I love ads but it's kind of ridiculous.

Creep to Black Friday madness. You could not pay me to go shopping today.

Sunshine to making kiss cookies on Wednesday. First Christmas cookies of the season.

Creep to never being able to sleep in anymore. I woke up at 6:30 yesterday and 6am today.

Sunshine to the gorgeous weather Wed and yesterday. Creep to how freaking cold it is today (currently 23!).

Sunshine to chopping down our Christmas tree tomorrow. I love this tradition of going to the tree farm the day Saturday of Thanksgiving.

Sunshine to my favorite season of the year - Christmas! Only 31 days until Christmas Eve.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Turkey Day! I want to take a minute to say all the people I am thankful for.

I am thankful for my husband, the love of my life. I cannot imagine my life without Michael and I treasure every day with him.

I am thankful for my family - from my parents and sisters to my brother-in-law, niece, and nephew and from my grandparents to my cousins, aunts and uncles, my family is amazing and I love them all so much.

I am thankful for Michael's family. They are such wonderful people and I am happy call them my family too.

I am thankful for my friends. I have so many wonderful people who support me, encourage me, listen to me, and are just plain awesome to me. I am pretty lucky!

I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!!!

Goals: November 2012

So November is already off to a busy start and I am behind on posting my goals. I have so many things I want to get done this month. Wish me luck!

I’ll post more about the honeymoon next week!

Purple Bold = complete
Black Bold = incomplete

Professional Goals – October 2012
Post surveys for Reunions. Done!
Follow up and thank volunteers. Done (before my boss even told me to do it).
Get Annual Fund fall info out the door. I stuffed the last of those buggers on Friday.
Update my calendar. Haha…it’s still March-June on that.
Update the strategic plan. Maybe I’ll get to that this month.

Personal Goals – October 2012
Weightlifting or yoga three times per week (not counting honeymoon week). How about once a week?
Cardio three times a week.  It’s hard to do when it’s so cold but we are going to keep going for now. Yes. We have kept up our running. But now it’s REALLY cold out so we are doing evening workouts. I do not like them nearly as much as our morning ones.
Write and send 75% of thank you cards. How about 100%?! Yay us!
Read at least three books.  Done. One was the worst book I’ve ever read. Do not read Big Girl Small.
Finish organizing the basement full of wedding gifts. Not only is this not done, but there are now several more things down there making it worst. What a disaster zone.
Start working on house plans and budget. We have the plans nearly done and are working on the budget.
Get pillows for the guest room shams. Done. I love the way our guest room looks now.
Finalize wedding albums. Done.
Finalize picture order and place it. This has been a total nightmare. I’ll blog about it someday.
Start thinking about where we are going for Ski Trip 2013. Not really yet.
Get my new Social Security Card and Drivers License. Done. Still waiting for my drivers license.
Try as many wines as possible on our honeymoon. I think I drank about 40+ wines. Some were just sips but like I’ve said, we drank a lot.
Try at least one brand-new food on our honeymoon. I tried lots of brand new things. The most notable was probably the scallop. I ate half of it and for someone who doesn’t eat any seafood, I think that’s pretty good.

Professional Goals – November 2012
Begin working on Distinguished Alumni/ae Award.
Begin planning for regional events.
Register for conference in DC in January.
Update my strategic plan.
Assist Alumni/ae Council with bylaws.
Work with volunteers on selecting date for Reunion Weekend 2013.

Personal Goals – November 2012
Run three days a week.
Yoga one morning per week.
Finalize picture order and place it.
Figure out wedding stuff to sell and get on Craig's List.
Meet with our mortgage lender.
Finalize house plans and timeline.
Change my name with all my credit cards, subscriptions, etc.
Get our Christmas tree.
Decorate for Christmas (after Thanksgiving).
Work on Advent Calendar 2012 activities.
Make winter appointments - doctor, dentist, etc.
Get a facial. My skin is so dry right now :-(
Girls night with my used to live in Chicago-now live in Minneapolis friends.
Phone dates with my friends. I've hardly talked to anyone since the wedding. Bad Jenni!
Bake some Christmas cookies.
Organize our basement.
Start Christmas shopping.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentines Day!

If you haven't checked out the animation Doodle at www.google.com yet today, I recommend doing so. Very cute!

Wedding Wednesday: The Engagement Story

I’ve received lots of requests for the engagement story and finally, here it is – sorry it took me so long!

Some notes before I begin with the story:
I’ll note a few examples of things that should have been Red Flags for me, but they went over my head. Some did not occur that day, so I’ll share them all at the end. Also, according to Michael, I “played in his hand so well” so I’ll note those things too as “Jenni making it too easy for Michael.”

Also, let me preface this story with this: Michael was totally normal and relaxed all day. I was so impressed with his secret-keeping skills because he usually sucks at it.

The Engagement Story

Saturday, December 17 started out like any other Saturday. Michael and I woke up and went to the gym. We stopped on our way home to see if Michael could get a haircut, but they couldn’t fit him in for a few hours so we decided to go home and then Michael would go back later in the day and I’d stay home.

Jenni making it too easy for Michael Moment #1
On our way home, I said how nice the weather had been so far this year and that we hadn’t been to Lake Harriet, our favorite MN lake and where we run in the summer, in a long time. I asked if we could go there soon. Little did I know what he had planned there in 12 hours…

Back to the story…
Once we were home, we ate lunch and then I hopped in the shower and Michael went and got his hair cut. When he got home, we watched a little TV and then got ready for the night. He had asked me over Thanksgiving weekend if I wanted to do another “Christmas-y” date night this year, since we had done one last year in Chicago and it was so much fun. We had planned it for that evening, so I didn’t find it weird at all that we got all dressed up for dinner. In fact, we have done that so times in our two years together that it seemed totally normal to me. I just thought we were going out for dinner like all our previous ones.

Self-portrait right before we left for dinner
Jenni making it too easy for Michael Moment #2
As we were getting ready, Michael asked me what I wanted to do after dinner, since the reservation was at 6pm so we would be done by 8pm. I said we should go look at Christmas light, as we had planned to go look at Christmas lights the next week, but we had a Christmas party come up the night we were planning to go. Again, I had no idea what he had planned for the night so it worked out perfectly for him.

Back to the story…
I asked Michael to surprise me with where we were going for dinner, just for the fun of it. We went to our favorite restaurant in the cities, Ciao Bella. Other than me feeling a little sick (random stomach ache) and our server being kind of slow, it was a wonderful dinner.

After dinner, Michael and I walked out to his car, and as we approached it, he said “I don’t think I want to take this car.” And I said “What?” and he said “I want to take THAT car” and pointed behind me. I turned around and there was a limo. He said we were going to go look at Christmas lights in the limo!!! I was so excited! At the beginning of our relationship, I told Michael the story about how my parents once surprised my sisters and I with a limo to look at Christmas lights when we were kids. At this point, Michael told me he had been planning it for awhile so it worked out perfectly when I suggested going to look at lights earlier in the day. Michael shared with me that his parents were picking up his car at the restaurant later that night so we wouldn’t have to go back there, and that we had the limo until midnight.

Side note - I wish I had gotten a picture of us with the limo...

Our driver took us all over the suburbs of Minneapolis/St. Paul, and we saw some great lights, like this tree:

We listened to Christmas music and talked, held hands, and enjoyed champagne; it was so perfect! As we drove back toward the city, Michael suggested that we end at “the lakes” (Lakes Harriet, Calhoun, and Isles), which I was all for, since I had suggested going to Lake Harriet earlier that day.

We drove around Lake Harriet and as we approached the band shelter, Michael told me that he had asked the driver to stop there so we could get out and go look at the lake. We stopped and got out of the limo, walking arm in arm toward the lake. Michael then started steering me more toward the Shelter and I said “Where are we going?” and I think he answered with something like “Let’s go the Shelter.” This is when I started to think something was up. The rest of the walk only lasted about 3 more seconds so I didn’t have much time to think through what was going on, just that it seemed weird.

When we walked up the stairs to the Shelter and onto the stage, I saw a table with flowers, champagne, and candles, two chairs and a blanket. The next few minutes are sort of a blur. I remember sitting down but Michael stayed standing, so then I stood up. I remember standing in each other's arms, and I remember Michael telling me how much he loved me and how he always will. I don't remember all the specifics though - I wish I did. But for those of you who have been engaged, you know what I mean when I say that there is just so much emotion going on that you cannot remember everything afterwards. Then Michael got down on one knee and said “Will you do me the honor of being my partner for life?” and opened a box with a ring. I was instantly in his arms, kissing and hugging him.

Time out – I have to say how great I think it is that he asked me to be his partner. I seriously have the BEST fiancé ever!

Then he put the gorgeous ring on my finger and then we stood there in each other’s arms for a few minutes, hugging and kissing and sort of crying but mostly just hugging and kissing. We took this quick picture too about we finally both stopped shaking:

Moments after we got engaged
I was getting cold so we sat down so I could put the blanket on me, and then I made Michael tell me the whole story. Here’s what I learned:
  • He started the whole process in early November. That means he kept the secret from me for six weeks, which is really good for him because he’s usually not so good at that.
  • He did everything at work and on his work email and phone so I wouldn’t accidently come across anything.
  • He got the diamond from his cousin’s husband’s friend in AZ, who is a diamond rep. Apparently, the guy wasn’t very good at returning Michael’s phone call so that led to some stressful times.
  • He never saw the diamond before he bought it – he was just told the specs and had to make a quick decision.
  • He hired a currier to deliver a cashier’s check to the diamond rep, who then overnighted the diamond to Michael at work.
  • He dropped the diamond off at the local jeweler’s where we had gone and looked at rings in August on December 5, and they said they’d have it ready by December 15.
  •  He asked my parents if he could ask me to marry him on December 10, when they came to town at his request (and he asked them not to tell me they were coming). Michael told me he had to work so I went to yoga while he "worked," a.k.a. ate lunch with my parents. The best part of that story is that when he got home at 3pm, I asked him if he had eaten any lunch and he said no and I MADE him eat. So he had two lunches that day J
  • He actually picked up the ring from the jeweler on December 12 and I happened to be hosting Girls Night at our house, so it presented the perfect opportunity for him to go show the ring to his parents since he usually tries to be out of the house when I host girls night. Then he came home and since my friends and I were all sitting around the kitchen table, he had plenty of time to hide the ring.
  • He hid the ring in our safe, which we both often use so he’s really lucky I didn’t go in it at all that week.
  • While I was in the shower the morning we got engaged, Michael took advantage of my absence by doing a bunch of prep work, including getting the ring out of the safe – that I ALMOST went into that day so good thing I didn’t! – and loading a table and chairs from our garage into his car. When he left for his haircut, I was still blow drying my hair so I didn’t notice he drove away with a trunk full of furniture.
  • His parents set up all the stuff at Harriet that night.
  • His original plan was to propose to me at the ice skating rink at a local park at the end of the limo ride, since we went ice skating on our first date. But the weather had been so mild that there wasn’t any ice so he had to rethink his plan the week of and decided on Harriet just a few days before we got engaged.

We sat and talked for about 20 minutes before hoping back in the limo and finishing the ride, though I don’t remember a ton of that because we just kept smiling and talking about how excited we were.

We called my parents – they knew it was happening that night – but no one else that night. I didn’t want to chance it and wake up the S family kids and I didn’t want to tell one sister and not the other. So instead, I text them at 6:30am the next morning, like that was any better :-)

As I said earlier, there were several things that should have been red flags for me:
  • The Sunday before we got engaged (the day after Michael met my parents for lunch), we were over at Michael’s parents’ house and his dad asked me “So your parents were in town?” I said “No. They have been in Colorado visiting my sister and seeing the new baby.” He quickly realized I had no idea they were here the day before and said something like “Oh, I must be mistaken” and let it go. I never thought twice about it until he brought it up the day after we got engaged.
  •  On Friday night, the night before we got engaged, Michael’s mom was acting weird. She was very smiley, but I thought it was b/c M’s sisters were both home. She apparently does not have very good game face.
  • On Friday night as we left his family after going to dinner, his mom said “See you Sunday!” I should have asked Michael what she was talking about b/c we didn’t have plans to see them on Sunday but I just let it go b/c we see them all the time so I just assumed we end up stopping over there on Sunday.
  • We ran into Michael’s dad and sister Molly on Saturday when we tried to get his haircut. As were talking, his dad said “I saw it up on Facebook already” and both Michael and Molly made weird faces. Molly literally screamed at him “What are you talking about?!” which I thought was weird. And his dad quickly and awkwardly said “The picture from last night. Jenni put the picture from Hollidazzle last night up on Facebook.” There was apparently a look of relief that washed over Michael and Molly’s faces, though I missed that, as they thought he was referring to Michael proposing to me.
  • We have NEVER gone to dinner at earlier than 7pm. We actually usually go around 8 so I should have thought a 6pm reservation was odd.
  • During dinner, Michael excused himself for a minute to “go take care of something,” and walked toward the front door of the restaurant, not the bathroom. He has phone calls for work and stuff all the time so I just thought he was doing something with that. He actually went outside to tell the limo driver we would be done in about 15 minutes.

It was such a romantic night, and honestly, my dream proposal: winter, Christmas lights, a limo, and just us when it happened. It could not have been better, and I am so lucky that I have such an amazing partner.

And one of my favorite things happened Sunday morning, as Michael told me to go open the door to the advent calendar. He had updated the day's activity a bit:

It says "Smile, we're engaged! Now kiss me."

So that's the story. Again, so sorry it took me so long to relay it to you. Next week, look for a wedding post about how we settled on our date and venue. We can't wait!

235 days!

Activity Advent Calendar - Final Update

The end of the activity calendar got thrown a bit off but that's ok - it was still fun and I think we'll continue to do it every year. Think of how fun it will be someday when we have kids!

Day 14

We have a lot on our schedules today, but tonight before we go to bed, let’s read a Christmas book together in bed.

I did buy a book, but I had such a bad day that day that we never ended up reading it. But we did read several on Christmas Eve so I think that counts :-)

Day 15

Hot chocolate is my favorite warm drink. Let’s enjoy some tonight and stir it with candy canes.

I was surprised just how good these tasted!

Day 16

I am so excited for tonight: Macy’s 8th floor display and the Hollidazzle!

We went with Michael's family (both of his sisters were back from college/Europe) and it was really fun! We watched from the balcony of Michael's office, which was great.

Day 17

Cannot wait to enjoy a romantic holiday dinner with you tonight!!!

We had planned to go out for our second annual Christmas-y date that night. Little did I know that Michael had planned much more than a dinner :-) I'll tell the whole proposal story soon, I promise, but here's a self portrait right after it happened. Best night of my life.

Day 18

Our front yard needs a snowman. I’ll find the scarf if you find a hat.

We didn't have any snow so we couldn't do this :-( BUT Michael gave me a train for our tree that day (so much for no presents this year) and I loved it!

Day 19

Elf, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Christmas Vacation. Even if we’ve watched them all already, let’s pick one and watch it again tonight.

We enjoyed Frosty the Snowman that night after dinner.

Day 20

Tonight’s Christmas concert will be a lot of fun. Can’t wait to hold your hand and listen to some great songs.

We went to see Cantus, "the premiere men's choral group in the United States" and they were great. I would definitely go see them again! Most of the songs they sang, I had never heard of and were not traditional Christmas songs but I didn't care. M and I loved it! Here's a little sample of one of their more traditional songs.

Day 21

Thanks for being such an amazing partner and coming to my boss’ Hannakuh party tonight. You are the best!

My boss had my coworkers and I (seven women and our spouses/partners) over for Potato Latkes. Yum! And I got to share our engagement story with everyone, which was fun.

Day 22

One of my favorite nights of the year - time to hop in the car and drive around to look at Christmas lights. And we get to sleep in tomorrow so we can stay out as late as we want.

We actually ended up doing this the night we got engaged. In a limo. I know, I PROMISE I'll share the whole story soon. Anyways, we ended up going to another holiday party that night.

Day 23

I’ve been trying to take lots of pictures and videos of us enjoying this holiday season. Let’s look at the pictures and watch the videos together today, and make sure we save them so we can show our kids someday.

I didn't take as many pictures and videos as I hoped, but we did enjoy looking at them. We ended up at ANOTHER holiday party that night, and spent the day wedding researching together. And we finally finished the stocking hanger. Doesn't it look great?!

Day 24

Today is Christmas Eve and I am excited to spend it with your family. Let’s enjoy the evening and sing our throats dry tonight at the Christmas Eve church service.

I sang until I couldn't sing anymore. And we had a great Christmas with Michael's family!

Day 25

Today might be the last day of the advent calendar, but it’s our first Christmas Day together in our house. Before we go to your parents’ house, let’s enjoy a cup of coffee together in front our tree.

Thank you for being so great and taking part in this activity advent calendar. I hope we continue this tradition every year.

We had a perfect Christmas Day :-)

We're Engaged!

Yes, that's right, my blog-reading friends (most of whom already know this because I've talked to you or you saw it on Facebook), Michael and I are engaged. He proposed to me on Saturday night. I'll share all the details in a future post, but for now, I'll share some pictures of the ring. Michael and I shopped for rings months ago and we liked the same thing: simple and classic. It is perfect. Now I just need to get used to wearing it :-)

Sunshines and Creeps

Sunshine to two weeks of no work. I need this break.

Creep to a crappy work week. My eyes hurt so much from crying last night that I had to put a cool rag on them to reduce the swelling.

Sunshine to Michael for being amazing and supportive this week (and always).

Sunshine to a fun weekend ahead – tonight, Hollidazzle and tomorrow, nice dinner out with Michael.

Creep to having to go to a work party on Sunday.

Creep to what is looking like a brown Christmas. No snow in the forecast, but I’m hoping that will change.

Creep to not being able to do Sunday’s Advent activity – build a snowman - due to lack of snow.

Sunshine to seeing Michael’s sisters this weekend. Both just came home on Wednesday, and it will be nice to have everyone together again for the first time since August.

Sunshine to seeing my family in 12 days!

Sunshine to lots of yoga and working out next week (I hope!).

Sunshine to almost being done with our stocking hanger board.

Activity Advent Calendar Update

We are already halfway through the activity Advent calendar. I can't believe Christmas is in 12 days!!

Day 9

Every time I kiss you, my heart flutters. Let’s make that happen again and kiss under some mistletoe at least once today.

So I didn't have real mistletoe for this. We improvised with some parsley :-)

Day 10

I will never forget our first date. Let’s recreate it tonight and go ice skating.

Our first date consisted of ice skating at Grant Park in downtown Chicago. It was a great day and something we both will never forget. Unfortunately, the place where we were going to go was closed on Saturday. BOO! We have a lot going on in the next few weeks but if we don't go before Christmas, I'm sure we'll go another time this winter. Instead, we went out for dinner in MSP, just the two of us, for the first time since August.

Day 11

It’s Sunday and we have the day to spend together. Let’s make our favorite Christmas cookies and snack all day.

On the agenda to be made were:
Bon bons - check!
Homemade Reese Cups- check!
Candy Cane Cookies - check!

Kiss Cookies - check! But I made them last night
Krumkake - no check - impossible to make on our electric stove, which I discovered last night :-(

We also made an AMAZING steak dinner with freezer corn, bread, and baked potatoes on Sunday - delicious!!!!!!!!

Day 12

I bought you these fun Christmas socks. Wear them today. You can wear them after work if you want :-)

Michael was such a good sport, as I was fairly certain that the socks I bought his were women's socks. He wore them anyways last night - I have the best boyfriend!

Day 13

I am so excited to make a stocking hanger with you so we can hang our stockings. Let’s do it today!

This is a repeat from a few weeks ago, but we are almost done. We worked on it on Saturday and now need to complete the candy cane strip. Here are some preview pics.
